Building Code update consultation June 2020

Summary

Proposed amendments to the Building Code will:

• improve building features for fire fighter operations in emergencies
• amend fire testing requirements so international fire test methods can be considered
• introduce a new Acceptable Solution for the design and installation of stormwater drainage systems
• increase clarity on provisions for kitchen and laundry overflows in densified housing

These proposed amendments will support high density housing, make consenting easier and ensure buildings are safe, healthy and durable.

The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) seeks your views on proposals for the following Acceptable Solutions and Verification Methods relating to Building Code clauses C1 – C6 Protection from Fire, E1 Surface Water, E2 External Moisture, E3 Internal Moisture, G9 Electricity and G13 Foul Water:

• C/VM2, C/AS1, C/AS2
• E1/AS1, E1/VM1, E1/AS2
• E2/AS1
• E3/AS1, E3/AS2
• G9/VM1, G9/AS1
• G13/AS1, G13/AS2, G13/AS3

The most significant proposed amendments aim to do the following:

• amend fire testing requirements so international fire test methods can be considered
• improve building features for firefighter operations in emergencies
• introduce an extra stormwater drainage option
• provide more compliance options for internal moisture

The purpose of biannual Building Code update programme is to ensure effective management of the Building Code documents. MBIE aim to continuously improve these documents so the Building Code keeps pace with modern construction methods and reflects New Zealand society.
