3 new future-focused science organisations, formed by merging and refocusing New Zealand’s 7 Crown Research Institutes, have been in place since 1 July 2025. These organisations will concentrate on key areas of national importance to deliver a science system that is more connected, more commercially focused, and better aligned with the needs of New Zealand.
The Government is developing a whole-of-government approach to address the issues raised in the Wai 262 inquiry. This creates an opportunity to take a holistic approach to protecting mātauranga and taonga Māori in the intellectual property system.

In 2018 a mid-way review of the National Science Challenges concluded with the Science Board agreeing to fund all 11 National Science Challenges at the maximum funding amount. This amount was set by Cabinet in 2013 for 1 July 2019 – 30 June 2024, and brings the total investment to $680.8 million.
