Electricity market
This section covers the electricity industry's regulatory framework, how the industry works in New Zealand, how to apply for electricity operator status and the Smart Grid Forum.
Electricity transition
The Government is exploring measures to ensure electricity is reliable, affordable and resilient during the transition to an expanded and more renewable electricity system.
Liquid fuel market
This section covers oil security, the oil emergency response strategy, engine fuel quality, biofuels, the Fuel Market Financial Performance Study 2017 and duties, taxes and direct levies on motor fuels.
Gas market
We have a central role in governing, monitoring and advising on the gas market to ensure that gas is delivered in a safe, efficient, fair, reliable and environmentally sustainable manner.
Geothermal energy generation
Geothermal energy is extracted from heat deep beneath the earth’s surface. New Zealand is particularly rich in geothermal energy, especially in the Taupo and Kawerau regions.
Offshore renewable energy
As part of Electrify NZ, the Government has committed to delivering a regulatory regime for offshore renewable energy, to enable investment and deliver clean energy at scale.
Hydrogen
The Government is taking action to enable private investment in hydrogen. Low-emissions hydrogen is a key tool for reducing emissions in parts of the economy that are less suited to electrification, such as heavy transport and heavy industry.
