New Zealand Screen Production Rebate

The New Zealand Screen Production Rebate is a government initiative to grow the sustainability and economic benefits of our screen sector in a dynamic global environment.

About the Rebate

Established in 2014, the New Zealand Screen Production Rebate (NZSPR) supports the screen sector by encouraging international and domestic production activity.

It provides the following rebates on specified goods and services purchased in New Zealand:

  • 20% for international productions (25% in certain circumstances)
  • 40% for domestic productions.

More information on the rebate, including the criteria and application process, is available at:

Evaluation of the Rebate

The Sapere Research Group carried out an independent evaluation of the New Zealand Screen Production Grant in 2017. The evaluation assessed the grant's economic and cultural impacts and its role in the development of the industry.

The evaluation report provides a useful insight into the value and positive impacts of the screen sector to New Zealand. However, it also confirms the difficulties in calculating the net economic benefit arising from the grant.

The evaluation report was published in June 2018 together with 2 peer review reports:

In 2022, Business and Economic Research Limited (BERL) completed a truncated programme of work for a report for evaluating the economic effects of the MOUs for the 5% uplift of the New Zealand Screen Production Grant.

The New Zealand Government signed a memorandum of understanding with Amazon and its The Lord of the Rings TV series, delivering jobs, tourism benefits, scope for collaborations with innovative New Zealand businesses, and continuation of a long lasting legacy for Aotearoa’s screen industry.
