Tēnei tūranga – About the role

The Business Rules Author is a team member position in MBIE. The Business Rules Author will bring their business understanding and perspective to work in partnership with their manager and other staff.

The Business Rules Author contributes to the operations of the Business Analytics and Targeting team. The team is responsible for developing robust profiles and providing quality risk and value information to support immigration decision makers.

Ngā herenga – Requirements of the role

Personal specifications

  • Ability to translate business rule requirements into implementable rules (logic statements) within a rules engine.
  • A good understanding of syntax, vocabulary, and logic in a rules engine, or similar tool.
  • Experience working with data.
  • Experience developing and testing business rules using rules engine software preferred.
  • Ability to develop the governance and rule management processes and procedures for use by analysts to manage rules.
  • Ability to work independently, a can-do attitude, and can quickly assimilate new information or areas of work.
  • Communicates effectively at all levels to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Must be a NZ citizen or hold a Permanent Resident visa.

Qualifications

  • A tertiary qualification or extensive, comparable relevant experience in data analytics and / or query tools.

Critical areas of success

  • Delivery of Business Analytics and Targeting services, products and programmes that actively support and contribute to the achievement of the Ministry’s outcomes and that deliver to the needs of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Write and implement detailed rules, following appropriate syntax and using standard vocabulary.
  • Monitor and report on end-to-end system performance.
  • Assist the Business Rules Specialist(s) manage rule deployment and rule set quality.
  • Manage the documentation of rule assessments, authoring and testing, and governance decisions.
  • Challenge rules for ambiguity, inconsistency, and conflict from a technical perspective.

  • Ability to build and maintain relationships with others.

  • Identify enhancements to existing processes as it relates to the work of the team.
  • Contribute to continous improvement process for the BAT team and INZ.

  • Ensures own and others safety at all times.
  • Complies with relevant safety and wellbeing policies, procedures, safe systems of work and event reporting.
  • Reports all incidents/accidents, including near misses in a timely fashion.
  • Is involved in health and safety through participation and consultation.
