Consultation opens on draft Patents Amendment Bill

Published: 17 March 2025

The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment is asking for feedback on an exposure draft of the Patents Amendment Bill.

Patents are critical to the successful commercialisation of new inventions, which are key to enabling a creative and innovative, growing economy. They protect an invention, process, device or how something works, and give the patent holder the right to stop others from copying their idea for up to 20 years.

The Government is progressing an update to the process for granting patents through this draft Amendment Bill. The update aims to provide more certainty to businesses on what patents will be granted and enable our leading businesses to innovate and grow.

MBIE is asking for feedback from stakeholders to inform the final Bill. More information and details on how to make a submission is available on the consultation page. Feedback is open from 18 March 2025 to 1 April 2025.
