Government confirms next steps for tourism data initiatives

Published: 15 July 2024

The Government is moving forward with recommendations from the Tourism Data Leadership Group, including establishing a new Tourism Data Partnership Fund.

The Tourism Data Partnership Fund is one of a range of initiatives set to improve the tourism data system and support the growth of the tourism sector that are being funded through the existing International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL) allocation of $5.08 million.

The Fund will provide up to $400,000 in grants into tourism and hospitability industry bodies co-funded initiatives that will contribute towards a more productive and environmentally astute tourism and hospitality sector.

MBIE will open the Tourism Data Partnership Fund on Monday, 22 July 2024, with successful applicants expected to be announced late September. Guidance material, eligibility criteria and application templates will be available on the MBIE website from 12 July 2024.

Following the Leadership Group’s recommendations, MBIE will also reinstate International Tourism Forecasts.

These data offerings will complement existing tourism data such as the Tourism Satellite Account and the International Visitor Survey and will support, among other things, regions and tourism operators with their business planning and performance reporting.
