Government launches te Mahere Whai Mahi Māori – the Māori Employment Action Plan

Published: 17 February 2022

Minister for Social Development and Employment Carmel Sepuloni and Minister for Māori Development Willie Jackson have today launched te Mahere Whai Mahi Māori - the Māori Employment Action Plan.

Te Whai Mahi Māori aims to address disparities, remove barriers, create opportunities and foster pathways for Māori to succeed in employment.

Actions in the plan fall into three key focus areas, or pou:

  • People: Māori have the skills and knowledge to lead, and succeed at all stages of their careers
  • Workplaces: Māori thrive in workplaces that have good conditions and are free from discrimination
  • Futures: Iwi, hapū and Māori are leaders in future-focused and sustainable sectors.

The actions have been grouped into immediate, medium and long-term actions. The immediate actions are expected to lay the foundations for the more transformational work that is planned for the medium and longer term.

Te Ara Mahi Māori, an independent reference group, provided recommendations to the Government on the focus of te Whai Mahi, following engagement hui across the motu. Following this, actions were developed and agreed in a cross-agency process. Cabinet agreed to the final Action Plan in December 2021.
