Government suppliers to receive faster payments

Published: 19 November 2024

Businesses supplying goods and services to government agencies will benefit from improved payment times.

On 5 November the Government announced some changes to the Government Procurement Rules to begin the transition to becoming eInvoice capable and improve payment times for government suppliers.

It is a step toward a more responsive, digitalised government service that will benefit the whole economy.

From 1 January 2026, agencies that send or receive more than 2,000 domestic trade invoices a year must have eInvoicing systems in place. These agencies will be required to pay all domestic trade eInvoices within five business days.

eInvoicing is the future of business-to-business invoicing, stimulating cashflow and reducing opportunities for human error and fraud. It’s about seizing the transformational economy-wide benefits of eInvoicing – totalling about $4.4 billion in boosted productivity over 10 years.

The change will enable government agencies to lead by example so we can realise this untapped potential.

To facilitate faster payments, the Government are also requiring around 135 government agencies to pay 90% of all domestic trade invoices within 10 business days, from 1 January 2025. This will increase to 95% from 1 January 2026.
