Great Rides get e-bike upgrade

Published: 16 August 2024

The Government has opened a fund to establish e-bike charging stations for the Great Rides that will help to increase their appeal and accessibility, both for international tourists and Kiwis looking to explore more of New Zealand’s great outdoors.

The Electrify the Great Rides fund is investing $3 million of revenue from the International Visitor Levy to support the installation of e-bike charging stations for the Great Rides around the country.

Great Rides’ governance organisations can each determine how many charging stations to install for their cycleway and will need to co-fund 50% of the purchase and installation costs for their regions.

Applications for funding are open for two months from 18 August to 18 October 2024.

The Great Rides have been an effective partnership for more than a decade between central government, local government and the local communities that host the trails.

The 23 world-class cycleways create jobs both on the trail and in the background, support businesses such as bike hire and tour companies, and attract hospitality and accommodation services to set up alongside the trails.

As travellers seek out more environmentally conscious experiences and as e-bikes get cheaper, more advanced and more popular, the Great Rides will become even more important to New Zealand’s tourism offering and economic recovery.
