Published: 12 July 2023
A practical guide for communities wanting to carry out their own just transition is now available online.
On this page
A guide to just transitions for communities in Aotearoa New Zealand includes guidance and case studies to equip communities to lead their own just transition, however big or small.
Around New Zealand communities are responding and adapting to change. The guide is one way to support them to take advantage of the opportunities these changes present and manage impacts in a way that is fair and just.
The guide covers four stages of community-driven just transition processes: connecting, planning, acting and adapting. It has been designed so people can pick and use what is most relevant to them and their communities.
A webinar to introduce the guide will be held on 7 August 2023 from 12:30pm to 2:00pm. Registration is available online:

The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment commissioned Motu Research to develop the guide, with co-funding from the Aotearoa Foundation to broaden research and engagement.
The Ministry’s Just Transitions Partnerships team focuses on supporting regions and communities to plan for and manage just transition processes in relation to specific economic shocks, alongside providing tools and resources that all communities can use for their own planning purposes.
