Ocean Race Auckland stopover to drive economic impact

Published: 18 March 2025

The Government is investing up to $4 million to help bring the Ocean Race back to New Zealand in 2027.

The Ocean Race will make a two-week stopover in Auckland in March 2027, bringing with it positive economic impacts.

The event is expected to attract more than 2,500 international visitors who are predicted to spend around $20 million here in New Zealand while the significant international broadcast and media coverage of the Ocean Race will help showcase New Zealand to the world.

While in Auckland, team boats are likely to undergo extensive refits, repairs and provisioning before embarking on the next leg.

The Government’s support also includes additional youth and sustainability programmes to be held in the lead up to the 2027 Stopover in Auckland, helping to make the most of the impact from hosting these types of events for future generations.

New Zealand has had a strong connection over many years with the Ocean Race, which was formerly known as the Volvo Ocean Race and before that the Whitbread Round the World yacht race.

The race route, including final stopover dates, is yet to be announced by The Ocean Race organisers.
