As a Senior Data Analyst in the Data Service Delivery unit within the Data, Insights and Intelligence (DII) branch, you will work closely with your peers to collect, manipulate and interrogate data to deliver robust analytical outputs to our customers and produce the quantitative insights and evidence required for them to be confident in their decision making. You will have established some areas of domain depth or technical subject matter expertise, with experience in the field of data analytics.
You can translate requirements into effective solutions have a significant impact on the perceived value of the DII branch. You will lead and manage larger, more complex pieces of work through to completion. Your pride in your work will mean you are creating analytical solutions in a robust manner, that will best serve the branch and our customers.
You will ensure quality and consistency of advice and practices within the Data Service Delivery unit. This includes providing mentoring, coaching and advice as needed to more junior team members.

Personal specifications
- You will have significant experience in the field of data analytics.
- Experience in designing and developing smart business solutions from complex data sources using the tools utilised by the Data Service Delivery unit.
- Strong experience using programming languages to wrangle, mutate and present data. The team currently uses: R, SQL.
- Experience using visualisation tools to create dashboards/reports. The team currently uses PowerBI.
- You will be confident engaging with our diverse stakeholders.
- You will have clear communication skills. A large part of this role is understanding the needs of our stakeholders and communicating complex ideas to them.
- You will be working in a heavily team focused environment. The Data Service Delivery unit strongly believes we work best when we work together. You will be a passionate learner, always keen to pick up new skills and understand new ideas.
Qualifications
- You should have a tertiary qualification in a related subject or a demonstrable history of relevant experience.
Requirements
- You must have the legal right to live and work in New Zealand and be able to satisfy the Ministry’s security clearance requirements.

Critical measures of success
- Data management and analysis including solving complex problems with efficient and reproducible analytics; statistical/econometric modelling; data visualisation; and statistical/econometric modelling, inference and forecasting/prediction in domains such as complex surveys and time series.
- Uses a range of evidence including data, research and other information from a range of sources to provide the foundation for evidence-based analysis, and:
- Contribute to and support others in the development of policy advice, briefings, research issues for internal clients, Ministers, Cabinet, Parliamentary Select Committees and other stakeholders.

- Contribute to the performance of the team through providing in-depth peer review and quality control.
