Tēnei tūranga – About the role

The Advisor is a vital team member position in New Zealand Major Events, which is the lead central government entity for events. It acts as an advisor to government ministers on aligning events to government objectives, links the events sector with the operational and leverage arms of government, invests in events to achieve outcomes that align with government priorities, and partners with other event stakeholders to attract, deliver and leverage major events.

This role will manage a specific portfolio of events from within the Major Events Fund, working closely with event delivery agencies, host city partners, and other Crown agencies to support successful delivery and maximise the benefits for New Zealand. You will be required to receive and assess applications to the Major Events Fund and make investment recommendations. You will also take on some project work, prepare briefings and advice for Ministers, and provide support and input into the wider team’s work.

You can be based in Wellington or Auckland, with other New Zealand locations considered.

  • An understanding of the machinery of government is advantageous
  • A relevant tertiary qualification or equivalent knowledge, skills, and experience
  • Must have legal right to live and work in NZ.
  • Flexibility to adapt within a fast-moving environment
  • Good working knowledge of local government and experience in the events industry or tourism sector is a significant advantage

Major Events Fund Portfolio Management

  • Ensuring events are successfully delivered and government outcomes are achieved.
  • Effectively manage an individual portfolio of events across the lifecycle of investment.
  • Provide sound advice and support to fund applications
  • Produce robust event analysis, recommendations and investment advice
  • Delivering project work, building and maintaining strong systems across the Major Events Fund and wider team.

Implementing NZ Major Event initiatives

  • Delivering project work, building and maintaining strong systems across the Major Events Fund and wider team.
  • Owns or contributes to multiple workstreams, being willing to share ideas, share the load and support others in their work
  • Meet our obligations under the Official Information Act, ensure all reporting requirements are fulfilled and all relevant information is up to date and on time.
  • Preparing briefs and Ministerial responses that are suitable to the recipient and appropriate to their needs.
  • Participate in multi-agency initiatives
  • Identifies and manages conflicts of interest appropriately
  • Proactively applies risk management principles and practices

Relationship management

  • Participate as an active team member and contribute knowledge and expertise needed to achieve wider government outcomes for major event investments
  • Develops effective working relationships with other tourism staff, MBIE managers and staff
  • Build and maintain effective relationships and partnerships with internal and external stakeholders, as necessary, in order to identify and share best practice information and to effectively collaborate to achieve government investment outcomes
  • Build and maintain effective working relationships with the regions ensuring a strong, enduring partnership
  • Represents whole-of-Ministry views and protects its reputation in any external interactions
  • Balance competing interests and priorities, ensuring impartiality and independence is maintained in all relationships at both central and local level
