The Tax Accountant is a subject matter expert role in MBIE. The Tax Accountant will bring their skills and experience to embed and sustain proactive oversight over the tax obligations and related compliance management activities for MBIE. The Tax Accountant will deliver education across the wider business and be the central point of reference for customer support on tax matters.

The Tax Accountant is responsible for ensuring quality and consistency of advice and practices in relation to their area of expertise.

Personal specifications

  • Experience in tax accounting in a medium to large organisation
  • Demonstrated problem analysis skills and sound judgement
  • Demonstrated communication skills, with the ability to clearly communicate technical information in plain language
  • Demonstrated ability to identify and effectively manage risks to maximise outcomes
  • A demonstrable commitment to developing expertise in tax management
  • Proven ability to develop trust and credibility with managers and staff
  • Advance excel skills
  • CA qualified with 3-5 years post qualification experience preferred

  • Must consent to and satisfactorily complete a credit check
  • Must have the right to live and work in New Zealand

Indicators of success

  • Delivery of specialist Tax Accounting services that actively support and contribute to the achievement of the Ministry’s outcomes and that deliver to the needs of internal and external stakeholders
  • Deliver quality month end processes to support the attestation process across tax requirements
  • Identify, analyse and advise on tax compliance and filing requirements
  • Prepare and file returns ensuring deadlines are met
  • Analyse and respond to tax assessments
  • Determine and plan timing of tax liabilities ensuring payment deadlines are met
  • Advise management on applicable new tax legislation on an ongoing basis and analyse business impacts
  • Analyse tax consequences of transactions
  • Participate in identifying and analysing tax planning and structuring activities
  • Participate in managing key relationships and networks
  • Participate in preparing information to support objections, appeals and litigation
  • Detailed monthly General Ledger Balance Sheet reconciliations occur for all tax accounts. Ensuring there is a robust process to clear outstanding reconciling items identified and that all balances are validated by supporting documentation
  • Process monthly tax journals
  • Respond to tax queries raised in tax inbox in a timely manner
  • Assist with delivering tax training modules to Finance Support staff
  • Seek opportunities for continuous improvement in the area of financial controls, reconciliation and month end processes and compliance
  • Ensure all processes are documented through detailed process notes and that these are regularly reviewed/updated
  • Work collaboratively across all of Finance & Performance and other MBIE teams to deliver quality outcomes
