Tēnei tūranga – About the role

Kānoa – Regional Economic Development & Investment Unit (REDIU) is the focal point within Government for regional economic development (RED).

This position is part of the Investment Management Branch, and will report to an Investment Director, Investment Management of Kānoa – RD.

A Commercial Lead will lead, with Investment Directors, the evaluation, contracting and management of projects, as well as, helping to deliver key work programmes within the Investment Management Branch, which may include, regional portfolio development, or, sector development.

Personal specifications

  • Knowledge of and understanding of investment principles and investment evaluation methodologies.
  • A strong ability to help in the evaluation of competing investment opportunities with the goal of developing a regional portfolio of investments that speak coherently to competitive advantages and gaps in existing value chains.
  • The ability to discuss, defend, as well as be open to new information relating to possible investment opportunities as evaluations develop, with peers, Investment Directors, Head of Investment Management, Directors of Crown Regional Holdings Limited (CRHL) and Kānoa SLT.
  • An ability to lead the development and delivery of debt and equity contracts with both internal and external legal resource.
  • An ability to help deliver specific work programmes within the Investment Management Branch of Kānoa, whilst managing competing priorities.
  • A demonstrated excellence in writing and presentation of information.
  • Tact, discretion, and a high level of trust working with confidential and sensitive information.
  • Knowledge of the Machinery of Government.
  • Proven ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines and multi-task in a fast-paced environment.

Qualifications

  • Tertiary qualification in a relevant field and/or comparable relevant experience.

Other

  • Must have the legal right to live and work in New Zealand.

  • Kānoa Regions Team as and when applicable.

Critical areas of success

  • Provide strategic advice relating to possible investments and support the Investment Management Branch as it develops and delivers key work streams within the Branch and Unit by:
    • Communicating complex issues and concepts clearly and succinctly both within a region and within Kānoa.
    • Coordinating, summarising and managing contributions to various papers and work streams.
  • Be familiar with commercial and regional economic development concepts and structures.
  • Demonstrate creative thinking with an ability to find solutions to complex issues - looking across investments and regional sectors to leverage and extend new investment impact.
  • Deliver complex projects through an identification, evaluation, contracting and management/ delivery process.
  • An ability to work closely with Investment Directors when necessary through project or workstream development while being confident to make decisions and self-lead.

Relationship Management

  • Build and maintain regional governance and stakeholder group relationships.
  • Develops and maintain effective working relationships with:
    • Any investment the Commercial Lead manages: sector specific or project counterparty.
    • Investment Team colleagues and wider Kānoa-REDIU colleagues through the development of any Investment Branch workstream the Commercial Lead leads or helps deliver.

  • Ensures own and others safety at all times.
  • Complies with relevant safety and wellbeing policies, procedures, safe systems of work and event reporting.
  • Reports all incidents/accidents, including near misses in a timely fashion.
  • Is involved in health and safety through participation and consultation.
