Natural gas makes a significant contribution to New Zealand’s energy mix and to the economy. It underpins electricity supply security, supports a substantial petrochemical manufacturing sector and is used by many export industries and over 266,000 consumers.
The gas market is governed by regulations and rules jointly developed by the Gas Industry Company and the government.

MBIE is proactively releasing documents provided to the Minister for Energy and Minister for Resources relating to the independent review of the electricity market performance and release of the Government's Energy Package.
The Government has announced a package of actions in response to the review of the performance of electricity markets. The review began in January 2025.
Initiatives that receive SEEC Programme funding are assessed to help understand the challenges and benefits of the schemes, and measure the support being delivered to communities.
