Dr Erica Seville has been appointed as the independent chair and has been tasked to find practical solutions that provide a more certain future for building owners and the public.
Dr Seville is a skilled consultant who has worked with organisations in New Zealand and internationally advising on how to prepare for and navigate crises. She is currently serving her third term as a commissioner on the board of the Natural Hazards Commission and is a director of Building Research Association of New Zealand (BRANZ). She holds a degree in engineering and a PhD in risk management.
Her research experience includes studying the effect of the Canterbury Earthquakes and the process of recovery on the business community.
Dr Seville will be leading a steering group consisting of 10 nominated representatives from both public and private organisations across the building, construction and property sectors.
The review, which is underway, is about establishing better ways to manage the risks of earthquakes to existing buildings and to strike the right balance between safety and pragmatism.
More information about Dr Seville and the members of the Steering Group can be found on the Earthquake-prone building and seismic risk management review webpage.
