Tēnei tūranga – About the role
The Team Leader, Corporate and Registries is a team leadership position in MBIE. The Team Leader, Corporate and Registries will bring their business understanding and perspective to work in partnership with their manager and other staff.
The Team provides legal advice across all of MBIE’s operations and in relation to MBIE’s regulatory systems.
The Team also provides advice on governance, integrity and conduct matters that touch the organisation. This creates opportunities for our lawyers to work in relation to a range of different regulatory systems and operational areas depending on experience and interest.
The Team Leader is responsible for building and enhancing the overall capability of the Team to ensure quality and consistency of advice and practices in relation to the team’s work and deliverables.

Personal specifications
- Ability to work well in and lead a team.
- A highly regarded and well-respected legal practitioner in their area of expertise.
- Current holder of a practising certificate or ability to do so.
- Extensive experience and knowledge of relevant law including public law and statutory interpretation.
- The ability to reason robustly and persuasively and deliver successful outcomes in a demanding environment.
- An ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing, with a wide range of people both internal and external to MBIE.
- Able to lead assignments and cross group project work.
- Awareness of, and sensitivity to, the cultural values of different ethnic groups generally, and the Tangata Whenua in particular.
- Knowledge of the Treaty of Waitangi and its impact on MBIE’s work.
- Must have the legal right to live and work in New Zealand.
Takohanga tuhinga o mua – Key accountabilities and deliverables
Responsibilities of this position are expected to change over time as the Ministry responds to changing needs. The incumbent will need the flexibility to adapt and develop as the environment evolves.
The Team Leader will be required to deliver results in the following areas:
- Oversees and leads the day-to day work of the team.
- Together with the other Team Leader in Corporate & Registries allocate work across the teams.
- Ensures the high quality provision of timely and accurate legal advice to MBIE managers and staff as required by the Manager Legal Services (Corporate and Registries).
- Instructs Crown Solicitors.
- Provides training for MBIE staff on legal-related matters.
- Communicates effectively and exercises sound judgement.
- Provides leadership and management to the Team.
- Supports the Manager Legal Services (Corporate and Registries) with advice and staff resources to meet MBIE’s corporate and regulatory systems stewardship responsibilities.
- Supports the Manager Legal Services (Corporate & Registries) with development and maintaining of processes for how teams work together and with the Manager Legal Services (Corporate & Registries) to enable the delivery of high quality consistent service and delivey of outcomes, including monitoring and reporting requirements.
- Performs other duties as may from time to time be determined or required by the Manager Legal Services (Corporate and Registries).
- Delivers the Team’s objectives and supports the wider Legal branch objectives. Actively supports and contributes to the achievement of the Ministry’s outcomes and delivers to the needs of internal and external stakeholders.

- Recognised as an expert in identifying and analysing legal and other issues and the provision of sound advice in a business context. Seen as a go to person within the team.
- Lead complex assignments and teams dealing with strategically important issues.
- An effective advocate and presenter who consistently demonstrates excellent judgement on a wide range of legal and related matters.
- Able to undertake engagement with stakeholders independently with advice from the manager; including proactively identifying client needs, possible legal and other issues and engaging accordingly.
- Identifies and escalates potential legal and other risks and opportunities that may impact on MBIE and develops options for mitigating them.
- Understands MBIEs’ legal business and consistently operates strategically.
