Cluster 3: Civil Security for Society

Research and innovation to develop the technologies of the future to address threats from cybercrime, natural hazards and terrorism.

Summary

This cluster responds to the challenges arising from persistent security threats, including cybercrime and natural and man-made disasters. Activities in this cluster focus on protection and resilience of physical and digital infrastructures, as well as of vital societal functions. This includes new technological solutions and better preparation to prevent and reduce the loss of life, harm to health and the environment, and economic and material damage relating to natural disasters.

Activities in this cluster include research on:

  • the prevention, detection, and investigation of crime and terrorism
  • the management of external borders, including illegal immigration and smuggling
  • the protection of critical infrastructure, such as energy, transport and telecommunications against natural disasters or malicious attacks
  • the prevention, detection, and response to cyberattacks
  • the prevention, preparedness, and response to natural disasters.
