The Māori NCP role is an opportunity to strengthen connections between Māori and the European Union’s largest-ever research and innovation programme, leverage international resources and expertise for Māori aspirations, and support Māori researchers to access international RSI expertise for local priorities.

Te tunga NCP Māori – The Māori NCP role

The purpose of Horizon Europe National Contact Points (NCPs) is to:

  • promote and publicise Horizon Europe opportunities among the research, science and innovation community
  • assist, advise, and train the community on the how the programme operates
  • support the community in networking and building research partnerships

While all of our NCPs are here to support all stakeholders, the role of our Māori NCP is to provide specific support to enable the engagement of Māori researchers and organisations in Horizon Europe. This is part of MBIE’s commitment to embed Te Tiriti and Māori aspirations across all aspects of our work, which is also embodied in the negotiated agreement for New Zealand’s Horizon Europe association. The agreement explicitly acknowledges our obligations under Te Tiriti o Waitangi, and the need to value and protect mātauranga Māori.

The Māori NCP for Horizon Europe provides a strong mechanism to support Māori engagement with the programme, by providing direct connections to the Māori research, science and innovation community and highlighting funding opportunities for research to be undertaken by and/or for the benefit of Māori. The Māori NCP works across the thematic clusters with a specific objective of supporting and increasing Māori engagement with the programme. They work with the rest of the NCP network to:

  • engage directly with Māori researchers and stakeholders
  • connect researchers with relevant funding opportunities in the Horizon Europe work programmes
  • assist researchers with finding potential partners (in Europe and New Zealand) for Horizon Europe bids
  • bring a Māori viewpoint and knowledge into general NCP engagements
  • provide a Māori perspective in our interactions with the European Commission
  • facilitate greater Māori involvement with the Horizon Europe programme

This will help to ensure that our investment in Horizon Europe is supporting the aspirations of Māori researchers and that the positive impacts of this research programme extend as widely as possible in the community. Greater Māori participation is expected to increase both the benefits of the Horizon Europe programme to New Zealand and the value New Zealand’s association brings to the programme in return.

National contact points (NCPs)

Please note that while we have one dedicated Māori NCP, all of our National Contact Points are also here to support Māori stakeholders.
