Advanced genomics research platform

The Advanced Genomics Research Platform (Genomics Aotearoa) is funded as a Strategic Science Investment Fund (SSIF) Infrastructure Platform to ensure that New Zealand is internationally participating in and leading the rapidly developing fields of genomics and bioinformatics.

Te Whare Wānanga o Ōtākou – the University of Otago is the host of the platform.

MBIE funding

Genomics Aotearoa received $39.752 million (excluding GST) over a seven-year period from August 2017 to December 2024.

The government is investing a further $27.5 million (excluding GST) over five and a half years from 1 January 2025 to 30 June 2030.

About the investment

The goals of the Advanced Genomics Research Platform are to:

  • establish an agile, leading-edge collaborative platform of research on genomics that establishes new connections in the New Zealand genomics sector and with genomics research end-users
  • grow genomics capability in New Zealand through excellent genomics research
  • grow new science collaborations with genomics research centres, networks and teams that are doing world-leading work and
  • increase the adoption and impact of genomics technology for scientists, relevant end-users and their sectors.
