Ngā Puanga Pūtaiao Fellowship
The Ngā Puanga Pūtaiao Fellowship invests in Māori and Pacific Peoples who are early to mid-career researchers to establish and progress their research careers in fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). This is a short-term initiative and will provide around $19.3 million (excluding GST) to support around 20 Fellows over four years.

Fellowship objective
The objective of the Fellowship is to invest in Māori and Pacific Peoples to establish careers in STEM research and to grow the network of Māori and Pacific Peoples in the research, science and innovation (RSI) system. The Fellowship will facilitate Māori and Pacific Peoples who are future leaders in STEM research to enter into or progress through the RSI workforce, building a career foundation that enables them to flourish.
Fellowship description
Ngā Puanga Pūtaiao refers to the early- and mid-career stage of scientific (Pūtaiao) researchers, when researchers are blooming and demonstrating their talent and potential (Puanga). At the same time, this career stage can be fragile and precarious. The Ngā Puanga Pūtaiao Fellowship will support researchers to be successful and progress to develop the new seeds for the next generation of STEM researchers.
An independent panel of Māori and Pacific Peoples will consider the suitability of eligible applications to ensure they meet the objectives and criteria of the Fellowships. Suitable applications, as determined by the panel, will then be randomly selected for Fellowship awards.
The Ngā Puanga Pūtaiao Fellowships are administered by the Royal Society Te Apārangi on behalf of the New Zealand Government.
Fellowship Funding
Two types of Fellowship will be awarded, early-career Fellowships (0-6 years post-PhD research experience) and mid-career Fellowships (7-15 years post-PhD research experience). Both Fellowship types have a four-year term, and all Fellowships will be awarded on an 0.8 Full Time Equivalent basis unless otherwise agreed.
The early-career Ngā Puanga Pūtaiao Fellowship will award per annum (excluding GST):
- $80,000 towards the researcher’s salary
- $80,000 towards organisational overheads
- $40,000 for research-related expenses.
The total value of an early-career Ngā Puanga Pūtaiao Fellowship is $800,000 per award.
The mid-career Ngā Puanga Pūtaiao Fellowship will award per annum (excluding GST):
- $110,000 towards the researcher’s salary
- $110,000 towards organisational overheads
- $60,000 for research-related expenses.
The total value of a mid-career Ngā Puanga Pūtaiao Fellowship is $1,120,000 per award.
